Lost Spirits Navy Style Rum
Lost Spirits Distillery
Los Angeles, California
ABV: 61%
122 Proof
Another round from Lost Spirits. This was the first drink we sampled on the tour. I think it’s the first offering because it takes the hair off your chest and gets you nice and loose for the rest of the tour. It also showcases their process very well. The story is told of where this term came from. Back in the 1500s, the English would tax higher proof alcohol more. To prove this, a gun pellet would be soaked in the alcohol and they would try to set fire to the gun powder. If it lit, it was deemed to be a “proof spirit”. This is definitely a proof spirit.
It has a bold brown sugar smell to it along with the strong scent of alcohol. The taste matches up with the smell but with the addition of a smokey flavor introduced with the rapid aging process. I’m not really sure what to make of it. It is too strong for sipping on or even to mix with. Perhaps a little bit used with other ingredients would be okay but that smokey flavor can throw off the usual rum cocktail. It’s not bad at all and is very unique. The price tag of $40 is reasonable as well. I just don’t know what to do with it so I’m not sure if I would buy it again.
