Double Rye!
High West Distillery
Park City, Utah
ABV: 46%
92 Proof
It’s time to visit another offering from one of my favorite American distilleries, High West located in Park City, Utah. I’m consistently impressed with their products and this one does not disappoint.
The bottle explains it is a blend of two different rye whiskeys, both aged a minimum of 2 years. The exclamation point is to signify the aim of the whiskey, to showcase the rye and create the spiciest rye whiskey anywhere. It suggests taste notes of cinnamon, clove, anise, eucalyptus buttons, and evergreen “gin-like” flavors. The older of the two rye adds a caramel sweetness and woody vanilla richness to calm the “bite” of the younger rye.
That’s a lot of complexity and I’m not sure if it all comes across for me but I agree that the two whiskeys balance each other to provide a bold and spicy front that smooths out fast and leaves a nice subtle sweet taste. Its nose is mellow, with a hint of vanilla wood.
At only around 35 dollars a bottle this is an easy recommendation to sip by itself or mix for a cocktail.
